Hilmar High’s thrilling postseason run came to a heartbreaking end in Friday night’s play-in game for a NorCal Bowl, as a late fumble, a missed field goal and then overtime played into the finish: Strathmore won the game 53-52 in 2 OTs.

Hilmar’s fourth-down step ended what appeared to be Strathmore’s final shot at a victory. The Yellowjackets (8-6) took over on their 5 with just 1:13 left, but a fumble 2 plays later set up a Strathmore TD and 2-pointer for a 38-all tie.

Hilmar’s Bryan Millan, who kicked a 43-yard field goal earlier in the fourth quarter, missed a 37-yarder in the final seconds that would have won it. Both teams scored TDs on their first 2 OT possessions, before Strathmore went for 2 points after its second TD – trailing 52-51, it was an all-or-nothing decision.

Strathmore (14-0) tore up Hilmar’s defense behind Joseph Garcia, who ran for 220 yards and 4 TDs, and also caught a TD pass. Garcia now has nearly 2,350 yards to go with his 40 rushing TDs.

Hilmar junior Isaac Sharp ran 18 ties for 236 yards and 3 TDs, as well as long kickoff return. Black Hat’s got tape from Sharp’s Friday Night performance, and check out his long TD run from the Wildcat formation.

Sharp’s 10-yard TD run have Hilmar a 28-23 lead early in the third quarter, and that grew to 35-23 on Justin Rentfro’s TD run in the fourth quarter. Sharp, though, missed parts of the game due to injuries. Rentfro had 142 yards and  TDs on 17 carries.

Both teams began their OT possessions at the 25, with Strathmore scoring on its first opportunity and Hilmar doing likewise, and both kicking PATs. on the second go-round, Hilmar scored on Tristan Crowley’s 9-yard TD pass to Carter Azevedo and the PAT made it 52-45, then Strathmore scored on a fourth-down play from the 7 on a QB scramble, then Garcia scored on the 2-pointer.
