Video/Workhorse Michael Ramos leads Lathrop past Sierra and into showdown with East Union

Check out Michael Ramos’ performance during Friday night’s 21-20 Valley Oak League win over Sierra, a victory that keeps alive Lathrop’s playoff hopes. Ramos had 31 carries for 180 yards, and check out his TD on the tape – the opening play.

The victory was huge for Lathrop, which has climbed into that second tier of teams in the VOL. That puts the Spartans with Sierra and East Union, behind the Big Three of Oakdale, Manteca and Central Catholic. Lathrop (3-3, 3-1) is hosting East Union (4-2, 1-2) this Friday – and it’s a must-win for both if they hope to earn a playoff berth.

Unless they earn one of the league’s three automatic berths – and those are almost exclusively reserved for the Big Three — it’s going to take 6 overall wins for a VOL team to earn a playoff berth. There is a slim chance that a 5-5 Lathrop or a 5-5 East Union could slide into the playoffs, but that’s a rarity for a 5-5 team to move on.

Got a Tip of The Hat to former Tracy High teacher and girls’ hoops coach Wayne Thallander for the nice photo – everyone loves a touchdown photo!
