Video/QB Bobby Avina tosses 4 TDs and Gregori Jaguar’s remain perfect with Downey on horizon

QB Bobby Avina continued his strong senior season, completing 9 of 12 throws for 4 TDs – including an 80-yarder to Marcello Longstreth, as Gregori’s Jaguars routed Johansen 54-6 to stay perfect. He’s completed 88 of 120 passes (73 percent) for 1,396 yards, with 16 TDs and a one interception though the Jaguars’ first six games.

With just four weeks remaining in the regular season, here’s how the MMC breaks down:

Five-time defending champion Downey (7-0, 3-0) is headed to a regular-season finale with rival Gregori (6-0, 2-0) in a showdown of 9-0 teams. Both are in the Sac-Joaquin Section playoff berths (6 overall wins, with 2 in league) with Gregori in Division 1 and Downey on the D1/D2 bubble …

The same night Downey & Gregori are playing for the title, Modesto (5-2, 3-0) will be playing Beyer (3-4, 1-2) in a winner-take-all battle for an at-large playoff berth – that’s the way we see it. Barring a stunning upset, both teams will have 5 wins going into Week 11 – Modesto is a significant to Downey & Gregori the next two weeks. While Modesto would be D1 in the playoffs, Beyer would play down in D3 against smaller schools …

The MMC is cut in three tiers –– Downey/Gregori, Modesto/Beyer and  Enochs/Davis/Johansen. Only a stunning upset allows a lower-tier to beat one of the higher programs. The MMC doesn’t throw us many surprises …
