Gregori High of Modesto, historically a run-focused program, took the air Friday night to bring some pride back to Modesto City football. For the first time in more than a decade — 2004 to be exact — a Modesto school beat Merced High.

And they did it by putting the ball in the air, beating the Bears’ secondary.

QB Bobby Avina was 16 of 20 for 255 yards and 3 TDs as Gregori stunned Merced 35-14 in a non-league game in Modesto. It had been 13 years since a Modesto school beat the Bears — Modesto beat Merced in 2004.

Avina tossed 2 TDs during a 21-point spurt in the first half, and that included a toss to tight end Gabriel Sanchez to open the scoring. Gregori led 28-0 at halftime.

Avina threw a 40-yard TD in the second quarter to make it 21-0, then he hit Brandon Azevedo from 25 yards before halftime. The Jaguars also intercepted three passes.
